How to choose: pick the niche where you already have a network (a friend in real estate, a family farm, a local contractor) or an existing skill (photography, GIS, project management). Your first three clients almost always come from a relationship you already have.

This is the step most beginners underestimate. In the United States, any drone flight performed for compensation — real estate photos, a paid inspection, even a monetized YouTube video — legally requires an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, not the recreational rules.

The Part 107 process, step by step

  1. Confirm eligibility. You must be at least 16, able to read/speak/write English, and in a physical and mental condition to operate safely.
